Retiring Fremont Town Justice Slams Bail Reform

January 11, 2024

FREMONT, NY – The Fremont Town Board met on Tuesday evening for their monthly meeting, and the main event of the meeting was the swearing in, of elected officials. Officials who were sworn in were town board members Seth Hilton and Mary Soukup, as well as Highway Superintendent Thomas Flansburg.

Justice Betsey Farley sent her report to the meeting, which is her final one before she retires later in January. In her report, she thanked the Town Board for their continued support for her and cooperation, and she also cited the New York State bail reform laws as part of her reasoning for retiring, as she said that she had no leverage to enforce town laws.

Additionally, the meeting served as an organizational meeting for the year. Cindy Smith was appointed as Deputy Supervisor.

There was also a discussion on amending the Town of Fremont Land Use Regulations to include New York State Building Codes, but the discussion on that, was tabled until a later meeting.

Some Changes In Who Will Take Certain Offices, In Steuben County

January 9, 2024

BATH, NY – Steuben County Election Commissioner Vicky Olin tells Wlea News that the Town of Thurston highway superintendent and town clerk have, since their November election victories, filed their resignations with the town of Thurston. The highway superintendent and the clerk, are married couple, and they announced that they are moving out of the area. What happens next? The Thurston Town Board will have to appoint a new clerk and new highway superintendent for this year, and then those two positions will go onto the ballot in the November 5 election this year.

In Fremont, there was a write-in campaign for the town justice job, and the winner does not want to accept the position now, so that will go on the ballot in the November 5 election as well. In Greenwood, there were no official candidates for town justice race, and there was a three way tie between write-in candidates. Because this is a judicial position, a higher court system might intervene and make a decision for Greenwood’s situation. Also, as reported earlier today, in Canisteo, there’s a situation where Town Supervisor Jason Woodworth did not seek re-election last fall, but ended up winning the November elections due to a write-in campaign for him. Woodworth now says he’s decided to stay on in office. Also in Canisteo, the person who won the clerk’s race declined to accept the clerk’s position, so a new Canisteo clerk was appointed last night.
