Velma M. Sherman, of Canisteo

CANISTEO: Velma M. Sherman, 94, of Cty. Rte. 119 passed away peacefully Thursday (Feb. 9, 2017) at Wellsville Manor following a brief illness.

Velma was born June 5, 1922 in Troupsburg to the late Ezra and Florence (Paul) Greenfield.

Velma had been employed at the custodial Dept. at Alfred University for 25 years. She was a 50  year member of the Almond Grange where she served many office positions. She was also a member of the Almond O.E.S. and a very active member of the Almond Union Church where she was on various committees serving her church. Velma also served time as a volunteer at the Almond Public Library and Meals on Wheels. She also enjoyed her time crocheting and making many quilts.

Survivors include two sons: Leon Sherman and Michael (Teeka) Sherman all of West Almond, three daughters: Roberta Sutton of S.C., Mary Lou (Richard) Kienzle of Pa. and Shirley Sherman of Canisteo. She is also survived by a daughter-in-law Hazel Sherman of Owego as well as 13 grandchildren and many great grand and great- great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband: Robert L. Sherman, a son: Robert Sherman, two daughters; Betty Stevens and Cindy Crosby, great-grandson: Hunter Kolsar, a brother: Paul Greenfield and a sister Minnie Bell Cornish.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 pm Tuesday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo, where funeral and committal services will take place Wednesday at 11:00 am. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Almond, N.Y.
