William B. “Bill” Young, of Canisteo

CANISTEO: William B. “Bill” Young, 93, of Maple St. passed away Sunday (Feb. 14, 2016) at McAuley Manor in North Hornell following an extended illness.

Due to an emergency health issue within the family of William  Young,  the calling hours and memorial service scheduled for Saturday from 11 am- to 2 PM at the H.P. Smith & Son Funeral Home in Canisteo will be postponed until a further date. 

Bill was born September 16, 1922 in Hornell to Berthold and Marie (Matthews) Young. On April 26,1942 in Canisteo he married the former Jean A. Norton who survives and resides in Canisteo.

Bill was a graduate of Hornell High School and had served our country in the U.S. Army Air Corp. during WWII from 1944-45. He flew 20 missions with the 376 Bomb Gr. 15 Air Corps. out of Italy. He retired as an electrician from the former Erie/Lackawana Railroad and Conrail. Bill was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. Anyone who knew him would know that he thoroughly enjoyed his time on a lake fishing or time spent in the woods hunting. Gardening was another passionate pass time he enjoyed and he was also a member of the Hornell Barber Shoppers. All things put aside, spending time with his family and friends at Demon’s Pond was very dear to his heart.

In addition to his wife of 73 years, Jean Young, Bill is survived by a son Robert (Carol) Young of Canisteo, two daughters: Sharon (Michael) Zielinski of Scranton, Pa. and Elizabeth Peters of Hornell. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, William (Kathy) Zielinski, Beth Garibaldi, James (Jeanine)Zielinski, Susan (Daniel) Snopek, Jeffrey (Heidi) Young, Rebecca Gleason, Brett (Holly) Young, David (Danielle) Peters and Michelle (Joseph) Lyons, 18 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The family would also like to acknowledge a very close friend William “Bobo” Bobowink of Hornell. In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and Richard Young and two sisters, Virginia Smith and Marilyn Ingalls.
