CANISTEO, NY – A representative from the Wimodaughsian library in Canisteo gave a presentation for the 2018 budget at Monday night’s monthly BOE meeting. Although able to keep operating costs in check for 2016 and 2017, 2018 will see almost a 20% revenue increase if approved.
Current operational cost for the Canisteo library and the Greenwood reading center are $78,054. In the 2018 budget they will be requesting $97,568. Although the figure may look like a large tax burden to residents at first, when broken down it really only amounts to around a $6.00 increase from this year or $30 per $100,000 of assessed value. Factors for the increase are as follows:
1. Increased maintenance costs
2. Minimum wage increases
3. Payroll tax increases
4. Replacing old computers, scanners, printers, and fax machines
5. Possible state and local aid decreased
6. Costs for getting building up to fire code
Also of note is that New York will completely eliminate reading centers within 5 years. Greenwood must transition into a standalone library by then which will require additional costs.
