VA Issues Statement About Postcard Mixup

January 25, 2025

FROM THE VAH: The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is sending letters to 46,677 Veterans notifying them of the potential disclosure of limited information that may have been sent to another VA patient. The Veteran Integrated Services Network (VISN) 1 had 22,351 letters mailed and VISN 2 had 24,326 letters mailed. No social security numbers or other identifying information were divulged in the mix-up, caused when Xerox Corporation, under contract to VA, experienced a printing error in December 2023.

The appointment notification postcards were generated by an application that converts information in a patient’s electronic health record to an easy-to-read format, then prints, seals, and mails the postcards. The event was reported on December 11, 2023.
The event involved reminder notifications for appointments scheduled between December 11, 2023, through December 15, 2023. The application printed postcards addressed to patients that contained appointment scheduling and reminders for other patients. This was due to a misalignment, or improper match, of the content with the name and address of the appointment postcard recipient.

Again, no social security number or other identifying information was disclosed. Veterans affected will receive a Privacy HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) Notification Letter. Veterans who have questions or concerns about whether their personal information may have been involved can call and leave a message at 1-844-838-5433 between the hours of 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Calls will be returned by the Privacy Officers at the local Medical Centers within two business days.

Assemblyman Joe Giglio: Changing Election Laws Was Wrong

January 23, 2024

Gov. Hochul and the Majority Should Focus on Governing Instead of Changing Election Laws to Benefit their Political Party
By Assemblyman Joe Giglio

ALBANY – A couple days before Christmas, when she hoped no one was looking, Gov. Hochul signed into law legislation that will force local governments to move their elections to even-numbered years.

That means candidates for local town and county races will have to compete for attention alongside elections for president, governor, statewide races and Congress.

She did this even though town and county officials, Republican and Democrat Board of Election Commissioners and members of the New York Association of Counties asked her not to. They warned that moving local elections to even years won’t save money, will only marginally increase voter participation and will make it difficult for town and county candidates to get their message out amid the dominance and noise of state and national campaigns, like the race for president.

And they are right.

The American people are sovereign. When voters go to the polls to vote in local elections, they are voting in the best interest of their home community.

Voters going to the polls to vote in local and county elections are voting to pick the elected officials who have the greatest impact on their lives. In other words, they are motivated and invested in the issues those candidate campaign on.

Historically, local and county elections are among the most competitive races we have in New York. They are also the races where challengers, Democrat and Republican alike, have the best chance of unseating an incumbent. Moving all elections to even years will end that and protect incumbents.

The hard-working men and women of New York are busy people. Everyone and everything is competing for their attention. How will local candidates, challengers and incumbents alike, find space in the media to get their message out amid the clamor of a presidential race?

Far from opening up and encouraging participation in local elections, Gov. Hochul and the Democrat majority in the Assembly and Senate have ensured those races will become bottom-of-the-ballot afterthoughts.

That’s by design. Don’t believe the governor’s rhetoric that she signed this legislation to increase turnout. She would never do anything to endanger her party’s dominance over New York politics.

Emboldened by one-party-rule in Albany, Gov. Hochul hasn’t been shy about her intentions. In 2021 Gov. Hochul told the New York Times working on a story about redistricting that as the leader of the New York State Democratic Party, she would use her position to help Democrats gain seats in the US House.

She’s changed her tune after those initial maps were ruled hopelessly gerrymandered and were tossed out as hopelessly partisan. But I believe in trusting people when they tell you and show you who they are the first time.

This legislation is blatantly partisan. No matter how they try to spin it in the press, the goal of Gov. Hochul and her allies in the majority in the Assembly and Senate is to twist the system to protect their power and privilege.

It will undermine the fairness of local elections by moving village, town and county legislative and executive races to even numbered years along with campaigns for state and federal office. Elections for city offices, sheriff, town clerk and district attorney will still be held on odd-numbered years. Any savings will be negligible at best.

And it ignores the fact that people aren’t voting because of us, because of what their elected officials do and don’t do.

They’re tired of the fighting. They’re tired of the lack of action. They feel ignored because they are being ignored.

The problem is we need a governor who isn’t running for their next office.

And we need a majority in the Legislature that will put on their hard hats and tackle the issues facing New Yorkers – the self-inflicted migrant crisis, rampant crime and out-of-control spending in Albany.

That’s the job we were elected to do.
Assemblyman Joseph Giglio represents the 148th

Borrello: The State Senate GOP Blocked Some Major Left Wing Climate Moves

January 22, 2024

For months now, we have heard and read about how the state’s Climate Action Council wanted to ban wood stoves, fireplaces and all natural gas in all cases and in all places. However, according to Senator George Borrello, the Climate Action Council did not get its way on everything. “Senate Republicans pushed back a lot,” Republican State Senator George Borrello said today on the Newsmaker Show. “That was during the hearing on the Climate Action Council’s scoping plan. We also pushed back in last years budget process, that’s how we were able to secure an exemption on the natural gas ban for agricultural buildings and for food services. I’m still opposed to the ban on natural gas, but we did make some progress there. We also talked about the Climate Action Council wanting to take away natural gas stoves and other natural gas appliances, and that certainly helped. We saw the governor and others backpedal on that,” Borrello said.

Alfred State Grad Comes In Second Place In Florida Competition

January 8, 2024

Alfred State College Spokesman Paul Welker says, a recent graduate of Alfred State named Jonathan Helms was in a trade competition for those who work in HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) businesses.

Helms first started in the competition to study for a test at ASC. “I took the multiple-choice questions in the first round to help study and moved on to the second round which tested my practical skills by brazing joints together. In the semifinals we had to gather all the supplies for the professional competitors and in the finals, we had to install a horizontal unit hanging from the rafter in a simulated attic.”

It has taken awhile for the result to sink in for Helms. “I am proud of what I accomplished but at the same time I am disappointed that I did not get first. I absolutely plan to compete again; I want the trophy.”

Helms earned his AOS degree in HVAC in May and currently works for Hilliard Heating and Cooling.

“Alfred State is very proud of Johnathon and pleased that Hilliard Heating and Cooling is supportive of continuing to strengthen and challenge Johnathon’s skills and abilities in the HVAC trade,” stated Dean of the School of Applied Technology Jeffrey Stevens. “Our faculty strive to instill learning as a lifelong endeavor within all our students and Johnathon is a fine example that demonstrates just that. Congratulations to a strong alum and a great employer with a top-notch technician.”

During his time at ASC, Helms was inducted into the SALUTE honor society. SALUTE recognizes academic achievement of student veterans. He was inducted in the Alpha Tier (3.75-4.0 GPA). Helms served in the Army reserves.

Helms and his fellow competitors were featured on the CBS Sports Network. For more information about the competition visit: ServiceTitan HVAC National Championship (tradesnation.com).
