FROM WELLSVILLE POLICE: Wellsville Police arrested Grace E. Smith, age 51 of Wellsville, following a Search Warrant that was conducted on Howard Street in the Village. As a result of the Search Warrant, Smith was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 2nd (Class A Felony), Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd (Class B Felony), Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 5th (Class D Felony), Criminal use of Drug Paraphernalia 2nd (Class A Misdemeanor), Endangering the Welfare of a Child (Class A Misdemeanor) and Endangering the Welfare of an Incompetent or Physically Disabled person 2nd (Class A Misdemeanor). Smith was additionally charged with 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 5th (Class D Felony), 2 Counts of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance 5th (Class D Felony) for incidents that took place in January and February of 2023. Smith was processed and arraigned before Wellsville Village Justice Thompson. Smith was committed to the Allegany County Jail without bail. Smith is due back in Wellsville Village Court on January 16th at 4:30 pm.

On December 18, 2023, at approximately 4:00 P.M., Troopers out of SP Olean responded to Community Bank, N.A., 3074 State Route 417 in the town of Allegany for a bank robbery. The suspect(s) fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. The Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Forensic Identification Unit are responding to continue this investigation. No injuries at this time.

This is an ongoing criminal investigation.

ALLEGANY, NY – St. Bonaventure University officials announced last night that Friendship native and former Vice President of Advancement at Alfred University, Jason Amore, has been named vice president for University Advancement at St. Bonaventure University. Amore is tentatively scheduled to begin work at St. Bonaventure in February.

State Comptroller Tom Dinapoli says the Cattaraugus Allegany Erie Wyoming County BOCES was audited. Comptroller Dinapoli says they did not keep good track of some of their equipment. According to the state comptroller office, auditors could not find, $31,000 worth of tablets and other equipment.

From The State Comptroller: BOCES’ capital asset records were incomplete and inaccurate. In addition, the BOCES’ purchasing agent was unfamiliar with the requirements of, and did not comply with, BOCES’ capital asset policies. As a result, the required annual inventories were not conducted, and we were unable to locate approximately $31,000 in capital assets, which included tablets, audio equipment, tools, data storage devices and a gaming console. Auditors reviewed capital asset records for 150 assets with a historical recorded cost totaling approximately $149,000 and identified one or more pieces of required information was incorrect or missing from BOCES’ records. Examples of the discrepancies included: 130 assets totaling approximately $133,000 did not have their current value, salvage value or replacement cost recorded; 76 assets totaling approximately $88,000 did not identify the employee to whom the assets were issued; and eight assets totaling approximately $24,000 did not have a recorded serial or identification number.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Nick Langworthy (NY-23) announced two grants for the Allegany County Soil & Water Conservation District’s project to stabilize and prevent further erosion of County Road 48. Both grants were awarded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for a total of $1,447,000.

“County Road 48 connects our community to schools, farms, businesses, and other essential services —we must maintain this critical infrastructure in order to ensure the safety and well-being of our residents,” said Congressman Langworthy. “I’m pleased to announce that the Allegany County Soil & Water Conservation District has been awarded two significant grants from FEMA to address the erosion issues and prevent further damage on County Road 48. I’m proud to work with local officials to not only address weaknesses in our infrastructure, but ensure the proactive maintenance of it as well.”

“We are grateful for the support from FEMA and Congressman Langworthy in securing these grants for the Allegany County Soil & Water Conservation District’s project to maintain County Road 48,” said Chairman W. Brooke Harris of the Allegany County Board of Legislators. “This funding is a testament to our shared commitment to protecting our local infrastructure and ensuring the continued connectivity of our community. The improvements to County Road 48 will not only mitigate the immediate erosion concerns but will also contribute to the long-term sustainability of our region.”

According to FEMA, the first grant will provide $1,377,000 for the stabilization of County Road 48 to stop any further erosion, and the second grant will provide $70,000 for the management costs associated with this project.

FROM NSYP: On November 27, 2023, Troopers out of SP Wellsville responded to a collision involving a bus and a vehicle. Preliminary investigation reveals that a bus traveling on State Route 19 was struck by a vehicle. The operator of the vehicle is in serious condition. The eighteen passengers on the bus have no or minor injuries.

More details will be released as the investigation continues.

ALLEGANY COUNTY, NY – From Allegany Co GOP Officials: The annual Allegany County Board of Legislators Republican Leadership Caucus was held to select the Republican Candidates for Leadership for the coming year following the regular November 8, 2023, Board Meeting. The results were as follows: W. Brooke Harris (Alfred, District V) was selected as Republican Candidate for Chairman of the Legislature and Kevin “Fred” Demick (Angelica, District I) selected as the Republican Candidate for Vice-Chairman of the Legislature. Steven Havey (Wellsville, District IV) was selected as Majority Leader for 2024. The candidates will be voted on by the full Board of Legislators at the Organizational Meeting on January 2, 2024, at 2:00 p.m.
