More Details About The North Main Street Extension Fire

February 28, 2024

North Hornell Fire Chief Mike Robbins tells WLEA News that the fire at 7431 North Main Street Extension, the France residence, was called in Tuesday night shortly after 6:00pm. Fire departments from Hornell, Arkport, South Hornell, Canisteo, Almond and Fremont. South Dansville’s Fire Department was on stand by.

There were no injuries.

“Preliminary reports are that the home owner was not there because it was a rental,” Robbins said. “He was welding out back and something had caught on fire on the back porch. He had put it out a couple of times, it was a little fire, and he thought it was out and he went back into the house. When he came back downstairs, the house was filled with smoke.”

There has been some talk on social media about the 9th Alarm, which Fire Chief Robbins called for last night. “The 9th Alarm is something that was set up after the Preston Avenue fires,” Robbinx explained. “The 9th Alarm is a Tanker Task Force, so that fire chiefs don’t have to call in for individual tankers, if a bunch of tankers are needed, we call in for a 9th Alarm and it calls in for all the tankers in the Hornell area.”

Fire Chief Robbins says the North Hornell Fire Dept. did end up going back in the midnight hour, at about 12:30am early this morning, not long after they had gotten back into service, to put out some hot spots. “While we were putting stuff back together we were dispatched again for a rekindle, the gas company, National Fuel, was on the scene. “Over all, everyone did an excellent job, working together and getting the fire taken care of and protecting exposures.

Joe Sempolinski: They Should Have Let Mazi, Be Mazi

Febraury 14, 2024

As heard on the national newscasts, Republican congressional candidate Mazi Pillip lost last night , to Democrat Tom Souzzi in the race for the Santos House seat in Long Island and Queens. Steuben County GOP Chairman Joe Sempolinski says, the big problem with her campaign was, her handlers, would not let Mazi be herself. “She was very protected,” said Steuben County Republican Chair and former Republican Congressman Joe Sempolinski. “They were holding press conferences where they had other members of congress standing next to her, also taking questions. She didn’t do a lot of interviews either. It seems like whoever was making the stategic decisions, was very afraid of putting her out there and having her take definitive stances, and I was a little surprised by that,” Sempolinski said.

Swain To Hold Two Open House Events

February 11, 2024
By Stephen Walker

On Sunday February 18 ski and snowboard enthusiasts can spend a few hours with Swain Ski Patrol at the first of two recruiting events. Ski Patrol volunteers provide safety and first aid as part of a national system of rigorously trained first responders. A limited number of participants will receive a free lift pass for the day as well as food and refreshments after an hour-long program that includes time on the hill and in the aid room.

The event will begin at 1 PM Sunday. Participants will learn about the many benefits given to patrollers, that include not only lift passes for themselves, but also family benefits or a “buddy pass” so that you can bring a friend with you for free. There are discounts on equipment, training opportunities at other resorts and the pride and respect that comes with a nationally recognized first class organization.
Membership Chairman Steve Walker is organizing the annual recruiting event for Swain Ski Patrol. Rigorous training for those who join includes a thorough course in Outdoor Emergency Care. The course starts in August and meets two evenings a week until November. Patrol candidates are taught how to deal with medical problems, from cuts and bruises to more serious traumas such as broken bones, concussions and cardiac emergencies. Beginning in January candidates are given a rigorous course in skiing and sled handling. Snowboard riders are welcome on Ski Patrol as well.
There are approximately seventy members of Swain Ski Patrol. Patrollers come from many walks of life from carpenters to business executives, from nurses and engineers to machinists and students. Many patrollers join as “YAPs”, Young Adult Patrollers, who can begin training as young as fifteen years old. Others join later in life and many continue to volunteer on Ski Patrol beyond their retirement from their primary vocations. A

bout 25% of Swain Ski Patrollers are of retirement age. Each member works an average of one shift a week during the season, but the season pass and family benefits are not limited to just the assigned patrol times.

A second Open House event is scheduled for Saturday March 2 at 10 AM.

Space is limited for participation in the Open House. To reserve a spot contact Steve Walker by emailing membership@swainskipatrol.org or calling 607-382-3195.

Cancer Services Program Issues Statement About Cancer Prevention Month

February 1, 2024

STATEMENT FROM THE CANCER SERVICES PROGRAM OF STEUBEN, ALLEGANY, CATTARAUGUS AND CHAUTAUQUA COUNTIES:

Cancer Services Program offers cancer prevention.
Dear Colleague,
February is National Cancer Prevention Month. This is a month used to promote ways to prevent cancer, the importance of finding cancer early, and ways to lower the risk for cancer.
The Cancer Services Program (CSP) of Steuben, Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua Counties delivers cancer prevention services every day. The CSP provides free cervical, colorectal, and breast cancer screening for eligible New Yorkers who do not have health insurance. Unlike many cancers, cervical and colorectal cancer can be prevented with screening tests. Screening tests can find the cells that lead to cancer. These cells can be removed before cancer grows. Although breast cancer can’t be prevented with a screening test, a mammogram can find breast cancer early when it may be easier to treat.
In addition to getting cancer screenings, healthy behaviors like keeping a healthy weight, staying physically active, and choosing not to drink alcohol or to drink less, can lower your risk for many cancers.
Cancer screening may save lives, but people who are uninsured, who do not have a regular health care provider, or who have low incomes are less likely to get screened for cancer. The CSP provides free cancer screening in Steuben, Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties to people ages 40 and older who do not have health insurance. The CSP will also help with you find a health care provider.
If you are age 40 or older, call the CSP at 1-877-778-6857 to find out if you qualify for free cancer screenings.
Sincerely,
The staff at the Cancer Services Program of Steuben, Allegany, Cattaraugus & Chautauqua Counties
