ALFRED, NY – The four gang assault suspects, Eric R Plante, 19, Elmira, Moses N Scharborough, 19, Elmira, Jayson E Lewis, 20, Elmira and William J Blye, 20, Elmira, appeared in Alfred Village Court on Monday evening, before Judge Wende Bush. It began with Assistant District Attorney Ian Jones making a motion for adjournment. Jones asked the judge to delay the court proceeding, because the primary witness, the victim, was hospitalized. The defense attorneys objected, saying that both police and others were present at the incident on Sunday morning, and that the law enforcement and others who were there, would be able to testify. The defense lawyers also argued that in homicide cases, it is standard procedure to move forward without the main witness (and in this case, the victim). Jones then said, “this was not a homicide case,” and explained the victim/witness will eventually be able to appear in court. A defense attorney then told the judge that the Allegany County District Attorneys Office had all the evidence collected, and that defense attorney asked for the court to proceed. Assistant D.A. Jones then stated that just because there was some discussion about discovery, that did not mean that the prosecution wanted to go ahead at this point.
Judge Wende Bush deciced to allow for a short adjournment, and asked Assistant D.A. Jones, how much time would be needed. Jones responded by saying, one week. The four defense attorneys then requested that the judge release the suspects. Judge Bush remanded the four suspects back to the Allegany County Jail. Bail for the suspects, will remain the same as before.
The next court appearance will be on Wednesday, October 25 at 4:00pm.

The suspects, who face felony charges, were arraigned before a judge and remanded to the Allegany County Jail in lieu of bail. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending.
Members of the college’s administration are actively in contact with the family as we show support and solidarity for a member of our community. We recognize that any situation of violence is unsettling in our small campus community and village. Staff at Health and Wellness Services can provide support if you feel your own well-being is impacted. You can contact them at 607-687-4200 or by going to T.A. Parish Hall during open hours.
We are grateful to the witness for immediately reporting the incident and to University Police Officers for standing at the ready, both last night and as a normal service 24/7. You can partner in efforts to keep yourself and the Alfred community safe by following these steps:
Have a phone ready, close at hand, to call police at 911 if confronted by aggression.
Be vigilant watching for unknown persons following you onto campus.
Travel in groups of two or more using the buddy system.
Our residence halls are locked 24/7. Upon entering residence halls, make sure doors lock behind you and are never accidentally left ajar.
Once in your room, make sure your door is locked.
Report any suspicious persons or circumstances to University Police immediately – 911 (emergencies) or 607-587-3999 (general #)
While Alfred is a small tight-knit community, do not be complacent about your safety- here, or anywhere.
Our student did not deserve to be assaulted, and no form of violence is ever an acceptable response to anything for any reason. The perpetrators of this assault, like anyone who commits violence, will be held accountable in the criminal justice system.
Collectively, we stand in support of our student, who has been hospitalized and is receiving medical treatment, and support for their family. Out of respect for the family and to cooperate with the ongoing investigation, we are unable to share more information at this time, but we appreciate your prayers to our student, family members, and others who have been impacted by this terrible incident.
Sincerely,
Steven Mauro, Ph.D.
Alfred State College President
If you see a lot more cars than usual in the Village of Alfred, that’s because it’s Homecoming Weekend and Family Weekend, at Alfred University.
Then, across the hill at Alfred State College, they’re saying that the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) has awarded the Alfred State College surveying and geomatics engineering technology program a $10,000 award. The annual award recognizes surveying programs that best reflect the organization’s mission to advance licensure for surveyors in order to safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of the public. Alfred State was one of seven schools across the country to be recognized by the NCEES.
Dean of the School of Architecture, Management & Engineering Technology John Williams credited the award to the hard work put in by Department Chair Erin Vitale and Assistant Professor Richard Carlson and Instructor Nick Ford. He also thanked the students for their hard work and is excited for the future of the surveying and geomatics technology program.
“We have great plans for this program in terms of future partnerships, technology, and expanding what we can offer to our students. Being able to have the technology and use it in teaching makes us unique and different. We are looking to use this award to bring in more tools and provide our students with opportunities to prepare them for their careers.”
The award jury of NCEES members and representatives from surveying societies met in June to select the winners. The prizes were awarded to qualifying programs to assist with each program’s continued efforts to promote the importance and value of surveying licensure.
I have been involved for many years with Alfred-Almond Central School District, going to Board Meetings for years and since the past year I have decided to step away.
Last night, I decided that I needed to go and attend the School Work Session, due to a proposed Policy change for Public Meetings:
Excerpt from the proposed Policy: “The public is not permitted to discuss topics unrelated to the District, matters unrelated to the agenda, and/or matters involving specific individuals.”
I would like to applaud and thank the 3 Boards members Jason Burdick, John D’Angelo, and Maeghen Kuhn for raising their objections with statements like “not reasonable, outrageous, and what is the point of Public comments?”. Thank you for standing up for the 1st Amendment of the Constitution!
ALFRED, NY, October 4, 2023 – Advancements are not slowing down as Alfred State College (ASC) continues to move forward with multiple construction projects to enhance and beautify the campus. ASC has an ambitious slate of $100 million dollars of improvements underway.
“We understand that the normal look and feel and travel around campus has changed as we worked on different areas on campus,” stated Alfred State President Dr. Steve Mauro. “We appreciate everyone’s patience for these temporary alterations, because once completed, our campus will be even better.”
Dr. Mauro shares construction updates:
The most noticeable project currently underway is the road widening and infrastructure project. In completed areas, visitors will notice wider roads and sidewalks that will make car and foot travel safer.
Under the surface, the college is installing new water lines, upgrading sewer and storm water lines, and installing new electrical and fiber conduits. Connected to this project is the addition of a second water tower and the building of a water treatment plant.
Plans for planting flowers, trees, and bushes are being made to add beauty to campus once construction on the road and sidewalks is completed.
The MacKenzie North construction project is nearing completion as well while the college is in final planning stages for the renovation of the Agriculture Science Building that is also home to the student-responsive financial aid offices known for tailoring aid packages for current and prospective families.
Over the summer the college beautified the Hinkle Bell Tower area in time for both the bell tower and MacKenzie Residential Complex to celebrate 50 years during the Homecoming and Family Weekend.
Dr. Mauro is excited for visitors to see all the changes. “I encourage past Pioneers to join us for Homecoming on Oct. 12 through 15 or future Pioneers to join us for one of our upcoming Open House programs either Oct. 21 or Nov. 5.”
