Why Have Auto Insurance Rates Gone Up Over The Last Few Years In New York State?

February 19, 2024

Car insurance rates have been going up at all insurance companies in New York State. We asked Jeff Ryan, owner of the Ryan Agency in Hornell, if that had anything to do with the fact that car theft has been happening more and more across the state. “The increase in auto and converter thefts has definitely impacted auto insurance rates,” Ryan said. “However the cost of vehicles, parts and the time it takes to get those parts has had a greater effect. Unfortunately right now it’s a crazy time for all companies in the auto insurance marketplace. It’s a good time to partner with your agent and consider appropriate deductibles and other strategies to help keep the costs down,” Ryan said.

February 16, 2024

Our news department has learned that longtime former Hornell I.D.A. chairman and longtime former Democratic Chairman Sam Nasca, passed away on Wednesday night. Longtime friend, former Hornell Mayor Shawn Hogan tells us that Sam Nasca died Wednesday night in Albany, surrounded by family members. “I am certainly devastated and heartbroken by the news,” Hogan said. “We had been friends for 50 years. Sam was an advisor and a mentor. He was the Hornell City Democrat Chairman when he asked me to run for mayor in 1985. I said yes, I would run, and I went door to door with Sam, on River Street, Oak Street, Delaware Avenue, and so on.

“Sam was committed to this community. He was one of the founding members of the Hornel Industrial Development Agency. He served with distinction and honor for well over 40 years. Sam was definitely a railroader. He worked as a trainmen, he got involved in the union and went to Albany and became a well known figure there as the regional district chairman for the UTU (the United Tramsportation Union) as their lobbyist and legislative representative in Albany. Sam had a long history of service to this community and to his union. He certainly loved his family and he was very, very committed to this community and to it’s future. Hornell Announces A New Drinking Water Program

February 13, 2024
From Deputy Mayor Jessica Cleveland

Hornell Selected for Drinking Water Source Protection Program (DWSP2)

The City of Hornell is excited to announce its selection to collaborate with a technical assistance provider in the development and implementation of a Drinking Water Source Protection Program (DWSP2). The DWSP2 is spearheaded by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) and is a voluntary initiative aimed at assisting municipalities in safeguarding their drinking water sources.

Water Treatment Plant Operator Leonard Fucci provided further information about the program and what it means for our community, “A drinking water source protection plan includes a delineated area to be assessed and protected based on where the public water system draws drinking water supplies. It would empower us, as a municipality, to protect our public water sources and the surrounding environment.”

Mayor John Buckley expressed his support and excitement for the project, “Protecting our drinking water is critically important. This is a great opportunity for the City to partner with the State to establish a plan that ensures the safety and security of our drinking water sources with no impact on our budget.”

The opportunity arose through continued efforts of City Planner Heather Reynolds, who highlighted the City’s commitment to environmental sustainability. “The City of Hornell is looking forward to working with the NYS DEC in safeguarding our most important natural resource,” said Reynolds. “The technical assistance provided through the DWSP2 will provide the City with analysis of our drinking water sources, and planning for protecting those sources.”

Plan development is expected to take approximately 18 months, with ongoing guidance and assistance provided for implementation efforts. The City encourages residents to stay informed about the program’s progress and welcomes community input throughout the process.

Work Begins on Veterans Memorial Park Upgrades

February 7, 2024

Hornell Mayor John Buckley says that the Hornell Board of Public Works recently authorized important upgrades at Veterans Memorial Park at James Street. This project includes reconstruction of the tennis courts, addition of pickleball courts, basketball court replacement, the addition of a splash pad to replace the baby pool, and upgrades to the pool house.

The mayor notes that construction crews are expected to be onsite this week as work gets underway on these exciting new improvements and additions. Crews will work diligently on these various projects to ensure their completion in a timely manner and will strive to minimize disruption to park visitors while work is being completed. He also says that the DPW will be installing new playground equipment as well.

“Our parks serve as vital recreation spaces for our residents. This project is made possible by a grant from NYS Parks and Recreation as well as local investment. I’m excited for these improvements to get underway and look forward to their completion,” said Mayor John Buckley.

Buckley: Municipalities Need To Send A Message To Albany

February 5, 2024

Hornell Mayor John Buckley, who was recently appointed to the New York Conference of Mayor’s Executive Committee, wasted no time at NYCOM’s Winter Legislative meeting as he introduced a resolution to oppose the proposed cut to CHIPS funding in the Governor’s budget.

“I’m urging each city, village, and town to consider passing a resolution to not only oppose any cut to crucial road and highway funding, but to advocate for annual increases to offset inflationary costs. This is a time for local governments to show solidarity and send a strong message to Albany.”
