Both Langworthy And Gillibrand, Fight To Keep Buffalo Post Offices Open

February 1, 2024

Do you know anyone in Buffalo, maybe someone who you send mail to? Democrat U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is opposed to closing down the Buffalo Post Office and having the Rochester Post Office handle Buffalo’s mail instead. “I think it’s a mistake,” Gillibrand said this morning during a media zoom call. “It’s going to harm people’s ability to get their mail on time. We sent a letter yesterday, to the PostMaster General, urging him to stop the closing of the Buffalo Postal Processing Center.” Republican Congressman Nick Langworthy agrees with the senator on this. “I recently met with US Post Office officials,” Langworthy said. “I wanted to make his position clear: I am strongly opposed to the proposal to move the Buffalo Mail Processing Facility to Rochester if it means jobs are lost in Western New York.”

Gililbrand Cracking Down On Robocalls/Robotexts

November 30, 2023

Today, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand held a video press conference to announce her push to crack down on robocalls, robotexts, and AI scams. Americans receive 4 billion robocalls every month, many of them from scammers. And as artificial intelligence grows more sophisticated, phone scams are becoming more sophisticated as well. Voice cloning, for instance, allows a scammer to mimic or impersonate the voice of an individual’s loved ones in order to steal money or information. Gillibrand is reintroducing the Deter Obnoxious, Nefarious, and Outrageous Telephone Calls (DO NOT Call) Act to establish new criminal penalties for robocallers, including prison time. She is also calling on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate and track potentially devastating AI-powered scams.

“Robocalls are obnoxious and disruptive at best and mechanisms for insidious scams at worst,” said Senator Gillibrand. “Scammers should not be allowed unfettered access to New Yorkers at all times of day and night. I am reintroducing the DO NOT Call Act to finally crack down on robocalls and robotexts and impose stricter penalties for scammers – including up to 3 years in prison. I’m also calling on the FTC to investigate and track increasingly common AI scams that target vulnerable New Yorkers. I am determined to end relentless robocalls and look forward to getting this legislation passed.”

The Deter Obnoxious, Nefarious, and Outrageous Telephone Calls (DO NOT Call) Act strengths criminal penalties for intentional violations of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), which regulates the use of telemarketing calls. Under the DO NOT Call Act, repeated violations of telemarketing prohibitions are punishable by a prison sentence of up to 3 years. The bill also doubles the fine for falsifying caller ID information from $10,000 to $20,000. Full text of the DO NOT Call Act is available here.

Senator Gillibrand is also calling on the FTC to track the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) to perpetrate frauds and scams in its Consumer Sentinel Network, a database to track scams that can be shared with local, state, and federal law enforcement.

Sen Gillibrand: Continuing To Work On Hostage Situation

October 10, 2023

FROM SENATOR GILLIBRAND’s OFFICE: Following a briefing with Acting Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Sasha Baker about the security situation in Israel, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, member of the Senate Armed Services and Intelligence Committees, issued the following statement:

“Yesterday, I spoke with DOD leadership regarding the current situation in Israel. I was glad to hear that we are already acting to fill critical munitions needs for the Iron Dome system that protects Israeli civilians from rocket and missile attacks. I will continue to monitor the situation closely and support efforts to aid Israel and secure the release of all hostages.”

Senator Gillibrand has long led a bipartisan letter in support of U.S.-Israeli cooperative missile defense programs, which advance U.S. national security interests by supporting Israel’s ability to defend itself against missile and rocket attacks. For several years, Senator Gillibrand has secured at least $500 million annually for these important programs. In the Senate, Gillibrand has led the push for these programs dating back to at least 2012.

Gillibrand: What A Shutdown Will Do In 2023

September 28, 2023

FROM SENATOR GILLIBRAND: WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand held a video press conference to discuss the cost of a government shutdown to New York. Gillibrand is calling on Kevin McCarthy and House Republicans to work with Democrats to fund the government and stop jeopardizing Americans’ livelihoods.

“A shutdown would mean that kids go hungry, troops don’t get paid, and the work of the critical federal agencies that make sure our food and water are safe goes undone,” said Senator Gillibrand. “It would have wide-ranging and long-lasting effects across our economy. We can’t afford to have it happen. I’m urging Kevin McCarthy and House Republicans to stop playing games with Americans’ livelihoods and work with Democrats to keep the government working.”

A government shutdown would be catastrophic for New York’s working families. Over 70,000 federal employees in the state – as well as at least 30,000 service members – would be furloughed or forced to work without pay indefinitely. More than 400,000 New Yorkers who rely on the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), including nearly 330,000 infants and children, would be at risk of losing critical food assistance and going hungry.

A shutdown would also hinder or prevent the Food and Drug Administration from conducting food safety inspections; the Environmental Protection Agency from conducting drinking water inspections; and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration from conducting workplace safety inspections – putting the health and safety of all Americans at risk.

The IRS could partially shut down as a consequence of a government shutdown, which would lengthen wait times for individuals seeking assistance.
A shutdown may also delay passport processing, disrupting New York’s tourism industry because of passport and visa backlogs, and force the National Park Service to turn away visitors at national parks, monuments, and related historical sites. This would affect tourism revenues in New York from sites like the Statue of Liberty and the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site in Buffalo.
