It’s The 14th Anniversary Of The Death Of Zach Smith

It was 14 years ago today, that Lance Corporal Zach Smith died in action in Afghanistan. He was a 2008 graduate of Hornell High School, a popular student who was a varsity football player.

The Post Office in Hornell was named after him in 2013.
Lance Corporal Zach Smith was 19 at the time of his death.

Update On Two Key Steuben County Court Cases

BATH, NY – Bath resident Larry Schoonover had a court appearance Thursday afternoon in Steuben County Court. Schoonover’s trial date has not been set as of yet, he’s in court again for conference on February 1, at 945am. Schoonover is accused of firing gunshots at a troopers, village police and deputies and investigators, in Bath, last August. Regarding the case of Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard’s suing of the county over insurance issues, which was also in Steuben County Court on Thursday, Judge Jason Cook says, he’ll issue an opinion sometime soon.

Sheriff Allard’s Lawsuit Has Been Moved To January

BATH, NY – Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard’s lawsuit against the county over paying insurance out of pocket, was going to be in Steuben County Supreme Court on Thursday, but it was adjourned. Now the case will be in court in early January.

The County And The Deputies Union Come To An Agreement On A Contract

JOINT STATEMENT OF STEUBEN COUNTY & THE DEPUTIES ASSOCIATION OF THE COUNTY OF STEUBEN

Steuben County and the Deputies Association of the County of Steuben are pleased to announce the finalization of a multi-year contract for our sworn law enforcement officers. With unanimous support from the County Legislature and a successful vote of the Association, this contract will cover the years of 2021-2024, providing these staff members with both fair retroactive pay increases and competitive salaries for the coming year.

“The Deputies Association of the County of Steuben would like to thank County administration for sitting down with us to find a resolution for fair and competitive salaries,” said Association President Matthew Sorge. “We would also like to thank the County Legislature for the unanimous vote for the approval of these fair and competitive wages. It was through the support of the community and continuous lines of communication that we were able to reach this deal.”

“While negotiations can, at times, become contentious, the County Legislature and administration have maintained its desire to find an amicable and equitable resolution to this process,” said Steuben County Manager Jack Wheeler. “We are very appreciative of the hard work and collaboration of the leadership of the Deputies Association and maintain great respect for the dedication of our law enforcement officers. We are one team in Steuben County government and look forward continuing our partnership with the Deputies Association and its members.”

Gillibrand Visits Steuben, Allegany, Chautauqua, Chemung Counties

This past week, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand was in Corning, Watkins Glen, Elmira, Jamestown, Salamanca and the Allegany County town of Belmont.

Langworthy Stops By The Steuben County Fair

BATH, NY – Congressman Nick Langworthy visited the Steuben County Fair Tuesday afternoon.  “I”m so happy to be here at the Steuben County Fair,” Langworthy told Wlea News.  “We’re celebrating our rich agricultural tradition, and it’s wonderful to be here with so many of the 4H families, and seeing these young people who have been raising these animals and showing these projects.  These young people are really the best and brightest in our community.”

Half A Dozen Alfred State Students – Going To Ireland

ALFRED, NY – A group of six Alfred State nursing students are heading to Ireland along with Associate Professor KathyAnn Sager to learn about the healthcare services in the country.

The group arrives in Ireland on June 25, and will spend two weeks learning in the cities of Dublin and Galway. Joining Sager on the trip is Molly Arnold (Dryden, NY), Bethany Gayhart (Canisteo, NY), Avery Grusendorf (Belmont, NY), Leah McCormick (Andover, NY), Maxwell McCumiskey (Fillmore, NY), and Samantha Price (Hornell, NY).

Students will be leading a discussion related to a topic of their choosing while the group explores various healthcare facilities in Ireland. The students will be journaling their thoughts and observations during their travels and the students will present a final project based on their reflections of the trip upon returning home.

Each of the students are in various stages of their educational journey and have different perspectives on the upcoming trip. Several of the students are already working in the field.

McCumiskey is excited to take part in the trip. “I feel this program will allow me to better understand health care and different levels of nursing in a broader sense, specifically outside the U.S. It is an honor to participate in this study abroad program which is allowing me to elevate my knowledge of nursing care and its history.”

“From this trip I will receive the benefits of expanded education and knowledge from living in a different country temporarily,” commented Grusendorf. “Learning the cultural differences can help me to potentially give better care when I am a licensed RN in the United States.”

The group leaves out of Philadelphia, PA and the trip will include time for the students to explore the area and experience the culture.

NYSEG Might Do A Rate Increase

New York State Electric And Gas is proposing an increase of $10.00 a month ($120.00 a year) on your NYSEG bills. This is something which will have to be approved by the State’s Public Service Commission. “In June 2023, New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) filed a joint proposal with the New York State Public Service Commission to upgrade our aging infrastructure, meet the State’s clean energy goals, and invest in smart technology to improve reliability and service,” officials stated. ‘The joint proposal reflects a settlement agreement among several stakeholders that have participated in rate case negotiations.
“While the filing comes after years of minimal rate increases, RG&E and NYSEG continued
to make extensive investments in the grid to provide customers with reliable electric
and gas service.”
