January 14, 2024

Mayor John Buckley has ordered City flags to remain lowered in honor of longtime former 7th Ward Alderwoman Jean Shepard, who passed away Saturday.

“We’ve lost an incredible woman and community member. Having honorably served on the Common Council for 30 years, Jean was a dedicated and tireless advocate for our residents. I was fortunate to have served alongside Jean for a time before she retired. She was never afraid to speak her mind, which I greatly admired. Jean was a mentor to me and I always looked up to her. HORNELL, NY – On Thursday morning, the City of Hornell Public Safety Board met for their monthly meeting, and the major point of discussion was the need for a greater focus on mental health and drug problems in the city. The Police Chief said that Hornell received 1,200 mental health calls in 2023, and in the first part of January, they are already up to 50. Additionally, officers from the city needed to use Narcan 42 times in 2023.

Hornell Police Chief Ted Murray noted that the Hornell Police Department is the only department in Steuben County to be fully staffed, and the HPD needed every officer this year, as calls went up by over 2,000 between 2022 and 2023.

Fire Chief Frank Brzowski said during the meeting yesterday that the Fire Department ended the year with 380 fire calls and over 4,000 ambulance calls.

Mayor Buckley: Statement On Sending Train Manufacturing Jobs Overseas

January 10, 2024

FROM HORNELL MAYOR JOHN BUCKLEY: “I want to share with you my thoughts on the recent decision by the White House administration to consider non-availability waivers that would allow some of the high-speed trains for the new Brightline West project to be made overseas.

“Thanks to the Buy America Act, hundreds of good paying jobs have been created at Alstom facilities in Hornell, where the first high-speed trains in America are currently being built. If passed, this decision would be in direct contradiction with the President’s pledge to invest in local communities.

“This is a defining moment for the President’s Buy America initiative, so I encourage you to share my attached letter with your listeners and readers to enlighten them on the dangers of moving ahead with this decision.”
