Collecting Political Signatures And Running For Congress When The House Maps Are Changing

Collecting political petitions for collecting signatures for local, county, state and congressional races: that process started today here in Steuben County. The Board of Elections officials in Bath said today that the deadline for filing petitions with the Steuben County Board of Elections is between April 1st and April 4th. Unfortunately for those running for the House of Representatives, yesterday, the State’s Independent Redistricting Commission rejected the latest congressional maps. Alfred University History Professror Emeritus Dr. Gary Ostrower says, there is limited time for candidates to get signatures and yet the Independent Redistricting Commission is going to be debating another plan for maps, well beyond the deadline for submitting signatures.

Hornell Community Arts Center Looking To Work Out A Deal With The YMCA

Hornell Mayor John Buckley said there is $200,000 available from the DRI (Downtown Revitilization) money for the Community Arts Center. Dr. Susan Grey says there’s been talks going on between the Hornell Ymca and the Hornell Community Arts Center – and talk of a possible lease agreement between City Hall – the Community Arts Center and the Ymca….Buckley and the Common Council are sending a resolution to the governor’s office asking that state AIM funding not be cut but be increased in the state budget. “We’re treated as second class citizens,” Buckley said last night, of small towns, cities and villages.

The Hornell Council renewed its agreement with the Steuben County Centralized Arrangement Court. A bond resolution for over a million dollars for Veterans Memorial Park improvements was passed unanimously last night. Other resolutions passed were about budget amendments. There was also a water and waste water contract agreement with the water operators union.

Langworthy Endorses Sempolinski For State Assembly

Congressman Nick Langworthy has endorsed Joe Sempolinski to be the next Assemblyman from the 148th District. Sempolinski is running for the district currently represented by Joseph Giglio, who has announced that he will not be seeking another term.

He is a proven leader who will fight back against the one-Party rule of downstate Democrats whose policies are hurting the Southern Tier. Lindley Woman Facing Drug Charges, Etc., After A Long Chase

A 43 year old Town of Lindley woman was arrested by the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office after a chase that went from Pennsylvania into Southport, into Steuben County and then back into Chemung County. Chemung County Officials say 43 year old Jessica Neally was the driver and they report that she is charged with 7th degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest and numerous vehicle and traffic violations. The drug in question is reportedly, Meth. Officials say that Jessica Neally was already wanted in Steuben County on charges of bail jumping and criminal possession of a controlled substance. The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office says Neally was turned over to the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department, and that she’s also facing charges in Pennsylvania.

Two Steuben County Teens Charged After Saturday Morning Fight In Alfred

ALFRED, NY – Alfred Village Police Sgt. Joshua Van Skiver reports that two male teenagers, one from Bath and one from Painted Post, were charged with disorderly conduct after allegedly getting into a fight on the street, at around 1:00am early Satuday. The Alfred Police Sgt. says that this allegedly happened in the area of Mill Street and Church Street in Alfred.

Both teens were issued appearance tickets.

Court Updates On Erwin Homicide And The Billy Larson Jr Case

Steuben County District Attorney Brooks Baker says the 54 year old female murder victim who was died on Wednesday, was the sister of the murder suspect, 59 year old John Marvin Jr.

Also, Billy Larson Jr of the Allegany County Town of Clarksville, he was accused of killing his mother and father in 2019, and he pleaded guilty in October of 2022. The Allegany County Court Clerk says that the court hearing that was going on last week was about sentencing, and the clerk says the hearing was adjourned until April 16 at 9am.

NYS GOP’s Likely Candidate To Run For US Senate

Steuben County Republican Chairman Joe Sempolinski tells WLEA News that he was in Binghamton this morning, at the state’s Republican convention. Sempolinski says that he and all of the southern tier GOP Chairs voted for former NYPD Detective Mike Sapricone, who is now the designated candidate to run against U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.

Palmesano, O’Mara And The Superintendent’s Zoom Call

Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R, Corning) has been strongly opposed to Democrat Governor Kathy Hochul’s proposed budget cuts to schools, Palmesano says he and Senator Tom O’Mara recently had a zoom conference call with around two dozen school superintendents.  “They said that this would be devastating to their school districts,” Palmesano stated.   “Also it would be devastating to the school district’s property taxes and taxpayers would have to make up the difference.  There would be major cuts that would have to happen to school programs, if the budget cuts went through.  Plus, the superintendent’s are trying to set their budgets,” Palmesano explained.

Erwin Assault Victim Has Died, Now It’s A 2nd Degree Murder Charge

Painted Post State Police are now reporting that the assult victim who was beaten up in Erwin on Tuesday morning, has died. As a result, the charges have been upped from 1st degree assault and 2nd degree attempted murder, to 2nd degree murder, against the suspect, John Marvin Jr of Painted Post.

Troopers also say that the victim was a 54 year old female, but they have not released her name yet.

Painted Post Man Charged With 2nd Degree Attempted Murder

The New York State Police in Painted Post report the investigation of an assault occurring in the town of Erwin. On February 20, 2024, at approximately 5:00 p.m., Steuben County 911 received a report of a person being assaulted at a residence, 348 Victory Highway, Lot #6, in the town of Erwin.

Members of the New York State Police and Steuben County Sheriff’s Office responded, locating a 54-year-old victim suffering from injuries sustained in an altercation. The victim was treated and flown from the scene by helicopter to Robert Packer Hospital. The victim is listed as being in critical condition at this time.

After an investigation, John N. Marvin II, age 59, of Painted Post, NY, was arrested without further incident. He was charged with Attempted Murder 2nd (B Violent Felony) and Assault 1st (B Felony). He was remanded to the Steuben County Jail, pending arraignment in Centralized Arraignment Part Court. The investigation continues at this time.

The New York State Police were assisted at this scene by the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, Steuben County District Attorney’s Office, AMR Ambulance, Coopers Plains Fire Department, and Guthrie Air/LifeNet.

Speeding Drivers In Arkport – One Driver Was Clocked Going 57 MPH

The Arkport Village Board is reminding residents to follow traffic laws in the village and elsewhere. The Village Clerk has had complaints about cars passing stopped school buses and speeding in the village, especially on West Avenue. Due to the speeding complaints, the village placed speed devices on West Ave to monitor the speed of drivers going through. DOfficials say that some divers have been routinely speeding on the street, with a top speed of 57 miles per hour being recorded in the 30 miles per hour zone.

Officials say everywhere in the village is a 30 miles per hour zone, except for the school zone and Route 36. The school zone is a 20 miles per hour zone, and Route 36 is a 40 miles per hour zone.

More Info On The Two New Hornell Fire Dept Call Men

The City of Hornell Fire Department is pleased to announce the appointment of two call men, Justin Haynes and Eric Watkins, following unanimous approval by the Board of Public Safety at their February meeting. Call men are an integral part of the Hornell Fire Department, providing support services on an as-needed basis.

Chief Frank Brzozowski expressed confidence in the appointments, stating, “We are fortunate and excited to welcome Justin and Eric to our team. Both possess the required credentials and certifications, and we have great expectations for their contributions.”

Justin Haynes is a City resident and currently serves as a firefighter at the City of Corning Fire Department. Brzozowski highlighted Haynes’ enthusiasm to participate with the City of Hornell Fire Department as call man and stay involved in the community.

Eric Watkins also currently serves as a City of Corning fireman and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience as a career firefighter. Brzozowski commended Watkins for looking to stay involved and maintaining his skills as a call man.

Mayor John Buckley was enthusiastic about the appointments, stating, “The City of Hornell provides outstanding service and having dedicated call-men is an integral part of that service. We appreciate Justin and Eric for offering their expertise and service to our community. We look forward to their contributions to the City of Hornell.”
